ABOUT THE DIVISION
The Division of Intensive Care Medicine under the Department of Anaesthesia, Analgesia & Intensive Care Medicine is one of the leading tertiary critical care centers in Bangladesh.
Our ICUs are equipped with modern life-support technologies and staffed by experienced intensivists, anesthesiologists, specialized nurses, respiratory therapists, and multidisciplinary consultants dedicated to delivering evidence-based, compassionate care.
We provide management for:

HISTORY OF CRITICAL CARE IN BANGLADESH
The Beginning
1981
Bangladesh started a new journey in critical care when the Department of Anaesthesia at NICVD established a multispecialty critical care service under the legendary leadership of Professor M. Khalilur Rahman.
1985
Four years later, the Department of Anaesthesia at Dhaka Medical College initiated Intensive Care Unit services guided by Professor SN Samad Choudhury, another pioneer anesthesiologist of Bangladesh.
1991
The success of these services led to the establishment of the third government ICU at IPGMR (Institute of Postgraduate Medicine & Research) under the Department of Anesthesiology with the guidance of Professor KM Iqbal.

EVOLUTION OF BMU
1998
The Government of Bangladesh upgraded IPGMR into Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), the country’s first public medical university primarily dedicated to postgraduate education and tertiary healthcare.
2025
The institution was officially renamed Bangladesh Medical University (BMU).
DEVELOPMENT OF ICU SERVICES AT BMU
With the advancement of anesthesiology, critical care medicine and other disciplines, ICU services at BMU expanded progressively over the years.
Specialized critical care services developed gradually, including:
• General ICU
• Postoperative ICU
• COVID ICU during the pandemic
The ICU complex became one of the major national referral centers for critically ill patients across Bangladesh.

MAJOR MILESTONES
COVID-19 Pandemic
BMU played a major role in managing critically ill COVID-19 patients and significantly expanded ICU services during the pandemic.
2021
A new 10-bed ICU facility was inaugurated, increasing critical care capacity substantially.
2023
A dedicated Pediatric Nephrology ICU was established to support critically ill children with kidney diseases.
Super-Specialized Hospital
The establishment of the 750-bed Super-Specialized Hospital further strengthened advanced ICU and tertiary care services.
